Chapter 26- Kilauea, Hawai’i, 1912

Sabine and Anastasia appeared on the slopes of a lush mountain. The humidity was overwhelming, it made Anastasia stagger. She looked out over the stunningly blue ocean as far as the eye could see. Strange sounds echoed through the rainforests around them. It felt like the middle of nowhere, a paradise the Gods had carved out.

“Where are we?” She asked.

“Hawai’i.”

Anastasia had no idea where that was. “What is that?”

Sabine smiled, “A series of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean. This is Odin’s current forge, though he has several scattered around the world.”

“He uses a volcano as his forge?”

“Yes, he does. He uses some strain of his magic to manipulate the magma to extract the minerals he requires.”

“What race can do that?”

“The Ifrit.”

“What are they?”

“Of course, you will not have learnt about them yet. They are an indigenous species to Arabia, though, in reality, he is a hybrid rather than a true breed.”

“A hybrid?”

“From what I’ve learnt he is a cross between an Ifrit and an Elf, but the latter is only hearsay. It could be a Human or some other extinct species.”

“Elf?”

“They were endemic to Scandinavia but went extinct about a thousand years ago, same as the Dwarves who they were at war with. Regardless, he is a very gifted man whose powers only grew when he became a Reaper, or as he calls us, Valkyries. He was a student of Anubis and even a Councillor, but has always danced to his own tune.”

“There’s still so much that I don’t know, isn’t there?”

“I think that only the Students of Anubis know most of what there is to know about the different species in the world. Some new ones have appeared, and some have gone extinct. Some of the species we deal with are endemic to only one or two regions in the world, these are the most at risk of extinction.”

“I’ve only encountered a couple of Kitsune from a distance.”

“You were in a revolution. The supernatural species tend to lie very low during such times unless they are already in some position of power. Living in Melbourne will expose you to more of them.” She thought for a moment. “As a European city, for all intents and purposes, you’ll likely encounter Angels, Demons, Succubi, Incubi, Werewolves or their kin and Vampires. Though there could be some Kitsune, Chinese people went to Victoria for the gold rush. There could also be local species that I don’t know of. I’ve spent most of my time in continental Europe.”

“I’ll let you know if I find any.”

“Please do, I do enjoy encountering new species. I did enjoy my time in Persia for that reason.

Come, it will take us some time to find the entrance. It has been so long that I cannot remember where the entrance is hidden.”

It took them several hours of hiking up and down the slopes with them both spreading their powers wide before either of them found a resonance. They followed this to a small clearing in the jungle.
